Definition (hairstyle term)

In styling language, definition means more visible shape and structure — most often referring to waves and curls. More definition usually means less frizz and a more “formed” pattern, but it can also mean less airy volume or a firmer feel if the hold is too strong.

Quick script
Copy/paste (definition → clear ask)

“I want more definition (more formed waves/curls) with less frizz. Keep it touchable, not crunchy, and I need the shape to last about [X] hours.”

What “definition” usually means

Search the glossary →

In hairstyling, definition is about shape clarity. For waves and curls, that means the pattern looks more “drawn” and intentional — with less fuzziness around it.

The most common definition trade-off is:

More definition usually needs more hold
A defined curl/wave needs support. If hold is too light, definition drops. If hold is too strong, definition can feel stiff or crunchy.
Definition ≠ texture
Texture usually means separation/undone movement (“piecey”). Definition means a clearer, more structured shape (especially for curls/waves).
Fast decision
If you want…
  • Less frizz + more shape → ask for more definition
  • More airy movement → ask for texture + separation
  • Longer-lasting waves/curls → ask for definition + medium hold
  • Softness first → ask for soft definition (not “maximum”)

Best clarifier line
“I want more defined waves/curls — less frizz — but still touchable.”
Levels

Soft vs medium vs strong definition

Soft definition
Visible shape, but still loose and lived-in. Great if you hate product feel or you prefer waves/curls that look effortless.
Medium definition
The most common “salon curl/wave” result: clear pattern, reduced frizz, still fairly touchable. Usually pairs well with medium hold.
Strong definition
Maximum shape clarity and longer-lasting pattern. Can feel more product-y. Best for events, humidity, or when you want curls to hold all day.
Pro tip: define the “feel”
Add one word: touchable, natural, or locked-in. “More definition” without a feel-word is where crunch happens.
How to ask

Ask for definition without getting crunch

If you want defined but soft
  • “More definition, but keep it soft and touchable.”
  • “Less frizz, more shape — not stiff.”
  • “Medium definition with medium hold.”
  • “I prefer it to look natural, not ‘set’.”
If you need it to last
  • “Stronger definition — I need it to last [X] hours.”
  • “I’m okay with less touchability — I want longevity.”
  • “Set the shape so it doesn’t drop.”
  • “Keep frizz minimal (humidity-friendly).”

The best full-sentence ask
“I want [soft/medium/strong] definition for my waves/curls with less frizz. Use [light/medium] hold so it stays touchable, and I need it to last [X] hours.”
Definition needs the right hold

Hold (term)
Avoid mistakes

What “more definition” can accidentally cause

Crunchy feel
Too much hold can create crunch. Add: “touchable” and ask for light/medium hold unless you need maximum longevity.
Flat roots
Heavy product can reduce root volume. If you want lift, ask for “root lift + defined lengths.”
Stringy “too separated” look
If you want definition but not stringiness, say: “Defined, but not clumped into a few pieces.”
Bring a photo — point to the shape
With photos, specify what you’re copying: “This wave shape,” “this curl definition,” and “this frizz level.” One pointed detail beats vague adjectives.
